CNN’s Employee Blogging/Comment Policy

I got an email from Simon over at Bloggasm about CNN’s new policy about employees commenting on matters CNN.  Apparently their new policy prohibits CNN employees from talking about issues CNN reports on - which is, last time I checked - just about everything.

MOST IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER: UNLESS GIVEN PERMISSION BY CNN MANAGEMENT, CNN EMPLOYEES ARE TO AVOID TAKING PUBLIC POSITIONS ON THE ISSUES AND PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS ON WHICH WE REPORT.

Now, my only point is that while I understand that high profile figures would generally want to abstain from comment in this realm, not all employees should be subject to the same rules.  A video producer, a graphic designer, or a copy editor don’t interject their opinion into CNN’s broadcasts and are only there are tools for the broadcast.  They should be able to speak freely.  Very few companies should be able to prohibit public free speech amongst their employees - nobody in their right mind is going to think that someone who runs Adobe AfterEffects for CNN is going to be speaking for the entire news organization about a given issue.  Just another reason CNN sucks.

I guess it makes sense that they don’t want people to go into chat rooms and say “I work for CNN, and I think that…” or comment in a Fark thread that “I work for CNN, so I find this thread funny.”  But to prohibit employees from publicly identifying themselves is a little bit beyond what I’d deem to be necessary to protect CNN’s image.

For those who are interested, click the “More” link for the entire policy.

Twitter Plays Role In House Walkout

Filed Under (Musings, Politics) by colin.ake on 01-08-2008

Nancy Pelosi dismissed the House of Representatives yesterday and the Democrats went home, but the Republicans stayed around today to protest that they weren’t given a vote on domestic offshore drilling.  Now, I’m not sure the details, but Republican Texan Congressman John Culberson began using Twitter to update people on the goings on.  Follow @JohnCulberson if you’re into that sort of thing.  I believe @PeteHoekstra is a Representative as well.

A couple things -

  • I don’t follow politics nearly as actively as I used to, but what good did this do besides be symbolic?
  • Filibusters don’t end at 5 PM with a press conference.
  • Awesome to see Twitter used as a communication tool directly between Representatives and their constituents.
  • I’d LOVE to be able to hear directly from my Representatives and Senators like this.  I wonder if I can write my reps and encourage them to get on Twitter?

Those are just some thoughts… Not sure what I think of the actions in D.C. on either side (I think we should have had a vote, but I don’t see the point of a publicity show like the GOP tried to pull off) - but I LOVE seeing Twitter used as a method of direct communication at least so we can know what people are working on.

We elect them - shouldn’t we have the option to easily find out about their day just like we find out about our friends’ days?

Pushing IntenseDebate

If you haven’t yet noticed, I’ve got a different comment engine than most other WordPress blogs.  It’s called IntenseDebate - and it’s pretty much the bomb digity.

IntenseDebate replaces the original comment system and provides some real value for bloggers.  How?  For one, it has profiles with avatars and reputation - giving your community the feeling they belong.  This may not seem big on a personal site like this one, but on larger sites it’s a plus.  Secondly, users can easily subscribe to RSS feeds on comments or strings of comments, staying involved.  Thirdly, IntenseDebate will email a commenter when someone responds to their comment - this drives traffic BACK to the site and encourages conversation.

What does it do for the user?  It helps keep them connected to topics they’re interested on.  It helps keep track of who responded to which comment with nested or threaded comments - it’s easy to see who responded to who at a glance.

There are some sweet widgets and such, but it’s a really easy, painless system to intsall.  And if you have any trouble, you’re not up a creek - everyone I’ve dealt with is really quick to respond and very nice.

Check it out if you have a blog - it’s installable on almost every popular blog system.  And if you’re just a reader, comment on this post for me and let me know what you think about the system - you’re the one that matters.

Take care,

Colin

Mobile Blogging

One of the biggest advantages of owning an iPhone as a blogger is the ability to blog from anywhere. I downloaded a WordPress app to the phone, entered my contact info and admin info, and I’m off to the races.

I plan on using this in two weeks when we are isolated in the North Carolina mountains outside Asheville, NC. No Internet? No problem. I’ve got myself a mobile blogging platform in the gorgeous little iPhone. And you better believe I’ll be taking my camera. I am going to try and write a lot of content for a new photography oriented blog as well as take some pics and maybe some video while we’re up there.

Be on the lookout for some sweet pics soon. More on the photography oriented blog soon.

Take care. I need to run.

Website Flipping?

The New York Times had an interesting article on flipping undervalued websites a couple says ago. It’s an interesting read, so give it a look-see. http://is.gd/18Vd

Interesting concept for thought… I’m not sure I could flip a website I knew nothing about, but If I found the right topic I think it wouldn’t just me fun, it wouldn’t be that hard. Just have to find an area I am an ‘expert’ in.  If you know me well at all, you know there aren’t many of those areas.

What are your thoughts on this website flipping concept?

iPhone Positive

Well folks, I write this post walking into work from my very own iPhone 3G. It cost far too much, but it is an awesome piece of equipment. After arguing with AT&T tech support for an hour and a half, they were entirely unhelpful and I was left to purchase an iPhone with no discount.

Anyways, I have an iPhone and it is awesome. But AT&T sucks, hands down.

1996 Corvette Pictures

The pictures are a little big - if you cannot see the whole picture, click the article title. -Colin

Last night I took some pictures of a 1996 Collector’s Edition Corvette my girlfriend’s Dad is selling.  It’s a great car (drove it for date night beforehand) :) - and I wanted to do it justice with some pictures he could use to help sell the car.  Without further ado - the pictures.

All shot with an AlienBees AB800 in a softbox.  The top two were time exposures with multiple pops of the softbox at different angles, and the bottom picture is just a 1/50th second exposure, I think.

Enjoy!  If you want to buy the car - only 96K miles and he’s selling it privately.

Take care,

Colin

AT&T: It Ain’t Getting Better

AT&T EVIL EMPIRE

Remember how I posted a few months ago that I couldn’t get an iPhone until October because of the equipment upgrade clause?  Yeah.

Here’s the screenshot from AT&T’s webpage.  I’ve removed my phone number and account number.

Original Upgrade Date

Now, here’s the same screen after I went into a store two days ago because this CrapJack (the third one in under a year) is making screeching noises at people on the other end.  He told me he could do nothing for me about letting me buy a new phone cause this one is CRAP, but he could sure change out my SIM card (it’s been done before, by the way).

Here’s the same screenshot now.  Notice anything different?  Like the upgrade date?

New Upgrade Date

What the hell is going on, AT&T?  I just try and be a loyal customer and you decide to pick a fight with me?  It’s going down now.  I’m NOT a happy camper.  I wanted to LIKE AT&T, not hate their guts.  I WANT to like them, and they’re trying to screw ME over.

If ANYONE has any clue what’s going on, please enlighten me.  Anyone work at an AT&T store?

Busy Week!

Filed Under (Chatter) by colin.ake on 25-07-2008

Sorry I haven’t been around to post much this week!  Work and after work activities have been absolutely crazy.  I’ve had at least one thing every night after work, and I can’t wait to eventually go to bed at 9 PM and get a ridiculous amount of sleep.  Before I get there (sometime next week, maybe?), I’ve got some great fun ahead tonight and this weekend!

Tonight I’m taking my wonderful girlfriend, Annie, out to dinner for her birthday.  Should be really fun - and I’d post where we’re going, except she reads my blog and it’s a surprise.  After that, I’m shooting some pictures of Mr. Lackey’s 1996 Corvette for some for sale ads - trying out some car shooting methods.  Then Saturday I’m working some for some friends, and helping throw a big birthday party for Annie.

Happy Birthday Annie!  Everyone have a great day and great weekend.  Try and get some rest if you’re feeling weary.

Take care,

Colin

I wanted to post some pictures from the wedding I shot last weekend - Lauren is my cousin and I was thrilled to see her marry Pace, a great guy.  It was a fun wedding to be a part of and I am thrilled to have some great pictures from the ceremony.  Without further ado, check out the first glimpse of Lauren and Pace’s wedding pictures.

Lauren starts the morning right: A newspaper and Coca Cola

Lauren’s hair isn’t done yet, don’t worry.

Pace starts out the morning at Starbucks with his groomsmen.

Well the hair is done.  Time for some makeup!

Still going…

Those black beads are rosepetal beads from Lauren’s great-grandmother’s bouquet.

Pace kissing his Bride!

Lauren walking to the reception with the two men in her life.

Pace decided to smash the cake in Lauren’s face!

Lauren getting a kiss goodbye from her Dad as she heads off with Pace on their honeymoon.

The wedding was awesome - it was great to be a part of it and I had an absolute blast shooting it!  Best wishes to Lauren and Pace on their honeymoon!
