On Mark McGwire and Baseball

I love baseball. It’s my favorite sport. I have a blog dedicated to my home team – the only team I’ve ever purchased season tickets for. I look forward to spring training every year. It is my sport.

Why? Yes, the Braves going to the postseason 14 years in a row as I grew up from the time I was six on helped. Yes, Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz played a role. But Mark McGwire did too.

McGwire admitted to using steroids lately. We all knew it before he said it. And I don’t know if you’ve watched the interview but he legitimately regrets it. Yes, it was wrong. But he’s admitted it and apologized for it. It’s time to move on. Other than the Braves’ 1995 run to World Series champs when I was 9, the 1998 season has been the most fun I’ve had following baseball. As as 12 year old I loved sluggers, home runs, and baseball. And it was because of the home run race.

I don’t care if it was against the rules – it was some of the best baseball I’ve ever watched. And it hooked me on the sport. I love baseball in part because of Mark McGwire crushing home runs. And even now that we’re done with the 1998 season, I still love baseball.

Thanks for that, Mark.
