Mojave Vacation

May 21st, 2009

Many of you know that I graduated in May – then I jumped on a plane headed for Los Angeles and drove to Mojave, California, home of quite a few aerospace corporations, including Scaled Composites, XCOR, and Masten Space Systems – the company I interned with last semester.

After almost two weeks up here, I thought I’d compile a list of cool stuff I’ve been working on and been privileged to be a part of.

  • The flight of XA-0.1B-750 – a vertical takeoff, vertical landing rocket vehicle built by the crew out here. Here’s a sample YouTube clip for those curious.

  • Engine Testing – Jonathan Goff received an all aluminum engine chamber while I was visiting – a variation of the 750 pound thrust engine we’ve got in the vehicle. The one in the vehicle is made of copper – and is a LOT heavier than an aluminum engine. When you’re trying to fly, weight matters… So the new core was mounted on the test trailer (inside a blast shield) and we did some firings. All the engines out here run on isopropyl alcohol and liquid oxygen – IPA/LOX – and are regeneratively cooled – meaning the IPA is inserted in the tip of the nozzle and runs the length of the chamber before being injected through a pintle. Fortunately, I believe we reached thermal equilibrium on the engine in the first set of runs (the worry was the temperature would rise too high and lead to a burnout of sorts – aluminum does melt at some point).
  • Website Redesign – Worked on some tweaks for the website to bring it up to date and update some content that needed updating. This took the majority of the time I was in the office and not out at the test site blasting sand in some way or another.
  • Saw tons of windmills – Between Tehachapi and Mojave (the daily carpool drive for most of the team) are hundreds of windmills, mostly constantly in motion. Some say this is because Tehachapi blows and Mojave sucks – creating quite the amount of wind between the two towns.
  • WhiteKnightTwo – On May 20, I got to see WhiteKnightTwo doing touch and goes at the Mojave airport. WhiteKnightTwo was built for Virgin Galactic by Scaled Composites. It’ll carry SpaceShipTwo to the skies once they begin flying – from Mojave, which Virgin describes as “a stunning location in the Californian desert which will afford spectacular views of the Pacific Coast.” It’s stunning alright – as someone in the shop put it: “stunning that anybody would want to live here.”
  • Regular Sonic Booms – Edwards AFB is close by – the F-22 that crashed a couple of months back was just over 30 miles from the shop here in Mojave. There’s a supersonic corridor (I think that’s the right terminology) nearby and during my second week there, we heard sonic booms sometimes multiple times each day.
It is/was a fun trip – depending on when I post this – and I enjoyed my time. As of now (still in Mojave), I’m ready to get home, sleep in my own bed, relax, and enjoy memorial day with those I love.
Take care,
Colin

  • @Urvaksh @stephenfleming I’m at 14 tabs right now and it’s too many for my taste. And that’s only because I’m comparing products. in reply to Urvaksh #

A Masten Vacation

May 11th, 2009

For the next two weeks, I’ll be in Mojave, California working with Masten Space Systems on anything they need help with. I interned with Masten Space Systems in the spring of 2009 and helped Michael Mealling with some business development stuff. Now that I’ve graduated, I’m going to keep working with them – and a two week “rocket vacation” is just what the doctor ordered.

Masten has a nice sized shop out here in Mojave. It includes desk space, a garage for the truck, another garage for the rocket vehicle, parts from all sorts of rockets and engines, and anything else they need. They also have a test site out in what is labeled A52 – or Area 52. That contains two pads, a test stand and a thick bunker wall protecting a viewing hut (Mom, don’t worry, nothing could get through said wall, except the snake that may or may not live under the wall). Mojave is the place to come for a lot of companies doing a lot of cool stuff – other companies based here include Scaled Composites and XCOR (and a whole bunch of other companies I can’t remember right now).

The guys just flew under a tether for the first time on Friday – and it went well. There are a few adjustments to make before we fly again, so I think those get kicked off today. I’m going to work on some wireless equipment that I’m familiar with from my Wandering WiFi days – we’re using that for communication out in the bunker… And I’m sure I’ll get stuck on a few more projects as the week goes on.

I’ll try and blog a few times about my experience out here in Mojave – partially because I’m sure it’ll be pretty fun – and partially because I’m awake WAY before anybody else as I’m on EDT.

Take care,

Colin

Graduated!!

May 11th, 2009

Graduation

Well, I finally graduated from Georgia Tech. That’s right – no more classes (at least no more undergrad classes) for me. It’s bittersweet, because I love a lot of things about Georgia Tech, but it’s mostly just sweet.

What am I doing now? I’m working for Georgia Tech Research Institute on a couple projects and then on the side I’m working for Masten Space Systems, a vertical takeoff vertical landing rocket company out of Mojave, California. I’m staying in Atlanta, which is awesome.

I’ll miss some of Georgia Tech. I’m a little sad I never got anyone on my hit list fired.  I’ll miss the trips to random places with my favorite faculty member – Dr. Ulrich. I’ll miss classes with my favorite College of Management professor – Peter Vantine. I’ll miss a few other things like randomly seeing friends on campus and stuff like that. I’ll miss free football tickets. I won’t miss the spam emails.

But I’m ready to move on. 5 co-op semesters, multiple semesters working part-time for at least one company, 5 years of classes or co-oping without a single break, and it’s time to be done with Georgia Tech.

Besides, the future is so bright, I gotta wear shades. Or something. B-)
