If you follow MLB - and if you don’t, you should - you know that the Braves and Red Sox made the biggest splash going into the trade deadline. The Braves added Mark Teixeira, Octavio Dotel, and a couple of other bullpen arms while the Red Sox added the incredible Eric Gagne as a setup man for their closer.
I like these moves by the Braves. Yes, we gave up our three top prospects. Yes, Teixeira is only a Brave for this and next season unless we re-sign him. Let me explain why I like this trade.
Here in Atlanta we were used to an attitude of “this is better in the long-term.” We’re used to not winning in the post-season and looking towards next year. Always next year. And then we trade our top three prospects for Teixeira.
Management clearly wants the series this year. And that’s huge here in Atlanta. We are tired of being almost incredible every year. Fans stopped going to games after 14 years of winning the division. Last year, we didn’t win. This year? More fans at games. They’re enthusiastic. They’re into the game.
And that was before we traded for Teixeira, the biggest bat on the market. Now we have decent starting pitching, a great bullpen, as always a gold-glove defense, and the NL’s most potent lineup.
Gonna debate that? How does this read?
Willy Harris, Edgar Renteria, Chipper Jones, Mark Teixeira, Andruw Jones, Jeff Franceour, Brian McCann, Kelly Johnson, Pitcher’s spot.
That’s an all-star slugging catcher hitting 7th. A lead-off man hitting 8th. 5 All-stars overall - 6 if Hudson or Smoltzie is pitching.
So, Mets fans, your one year of fun winning the division is over. We mean business, this year. Here we come.
